Renew your home in simple ways

There comes a time when everyone considers making a change to their home décor. While a complete renovation is the surest way to end up with a home that has entirely changed, that is not always a viable option for most people. The obvious alternative to renovation is to find ways to give your home a renewed feeling that are cheaper, easier and less time-consuming.

Colour Scheme

The easiest way to change a home’s appearance is to change the colours in the house. There are three main things to consider when planning a colour scheme. The first thing that you should keep in mind is that your colours should match. This seems obvious but unmatched colours are usually the culprits in poorly designed rooms. The next is to think about the effect. Darker colours should be on the bottom and lighter colours should be above eye level. At eye level, it is a good idea to place objects that tie the colours together. The final thing to remember is that limiting your thinking limits the end result. Have fun and experiment until you find something that works for your space.

Lighting

%d0%bd%d1%829A quick and easy fix for any room of the house is to change the lighting. It is often quite surprising how much of a difference the right lighting can make. Taking care of those dark corners and making sure that everything in the room is well-lit will improve the feel of your room greatly, because it will make the space feel lighter and airier. Maximizing the natural light coming into a room is also a good way to improve the feel of a space. Using mirrors to reflect incoming light can be a very cheap and fun way to lighten things up.

There are a lot of lighting choices out there, but the most versatile are LED lights. They can be a little bit expensive, but they last a long time and come in every shade and colour tone under the sun. That gives you almost unlimited lighting options that can be modified to suit any occasion.

Refurbishing Furniture

Retouching your furniture with a coat of paint can make a world of difference in the look and feel of your home. If your home is filled with aging wooden tables, cabinets, chairs, and shelves, a simple sandpaper treatment and a couple of coats of paint can turn them into completely new accents to your home décor. In order to add to the effect, adding fun and colourful throws and cushions can give old furniture that extra bit of style that they need.

Decoration

%d0%bd%d1%8210Adding handmade pots or vases is a great way to add some personality to your home, and if you choose them after the colour scheme has been decided, it is easy to use your decorations to tie everything together, while at the same time adding some needed textures and shapes.

Another thing that can be done is to simplify the storage. Create boxes or crates of some kind that allow all of the clutter to be stored away out of sight. Removing all of the odds and ends from immediate view goes a long way towards creating a fresh feel. It is always good practice to keep your knickknacks stored, and to display only the items that add to the look of the room.

Home Styling for Viewings

I recently had to sell my house and was faced with the question of desirability. I knew my home was nice and the neighbourhood that it was in was also generally sought after, but after several viewings I began to realize that people weren’t really thrilled with what they were seeing. After a little soul searching and a lot of research, I decided to give my home a makeover. Home styling, also known as home staging, is an art form like any other. To do it properly takes time, a vision, and a little patience. Here are some of the things that I learned from my experience.

The most important thing to remember when home staging is that the people coming to view your home have never seen either it or you before. The house must be shown for its own sake and your personal feelings about it need to be left on the back burner. It’s presentation time!

Kerb Appeal

%d0%bd%d1%824The first impression is important. Much like the way the first chapter of a book can help you decide whether you should continue reading, the way your home looks from the street is going to be the first step in coercing the buyer to purchase the property. Plant fresh flowers, lay down some sod if the grass is bad, and paint the windows and door. It’ll be worth it in the end.

Cleanliness

One of the most detrimental things for those wanting to sell is to have a dirty house when buyers come to visit. Sure, everyone knows that things can get dirty from time to time, but when potential buyers come to a house they want to imagine themselves living there and that is very hard to do when you see someone’s socks lying on the floor. Keep the home immaculate.

Remove the Personal Feel

%d0%bd%d1%825Similar to the reasoning behind the need for keeping things clean and tidy, it is recommended to remove personal pictures and other items that speak to you and your living in the house. Again, the customer is not actually looking at your home, but rather a product on the market. You should keep your house in a state that invites visitors to imagine themselves spending their valued time on the furniture, and cooking family meals on the stovetop.

Perceived Spaciousness and Lighting

You will want to maximize the space in every part of your home by spreading our your furniture to use up all of the space available. Doing this may seem counterintuitive because by spreading things out you are essentially creating less floor space, but the overall look will be airier as there will be no cramped areas. This method is also useful to make it appear that there are no unusable areas in the home. After achieving the illusion of more space, it will be time to think about the type of lighting that will best compliment the room. There are a lot of choices out there, but whichever you choose, make sure that it is bright enough to light every corner of the room, while at the same time making sure that it not so bright as to seem uncomfortable.

Decorate Your Outdoor Area

Thinking about beautifying your home leads you to a couple of different places. The first is usually the interior and the exterior typically follows in second place. People have many reasons for decorating and personalizing their living spaces the way that they do, but the most important ones have to do with comfort and style. Many people spend their free time outdoors and they love the feeling of comfort when they are outside. They also like their space to be unique, and to show visitors a good time.

Structures and Walkways

%d0%bd%d1%827Depending on the size of your space, you will want to consider building a structure in which people can spend time. Patios are nice for this as well as gazebos. The advantage of a patio is that it is attached to the house and walking inside to get drinks and snacks is very easy. A house with a patio always seems a little bigger because the patio adds an outdoor room to the house. The gazebo, on the other hand, makes hanging out away from the house a lot of fun. The feeling of being separated from the house makes it easier to experience the outdoors and the peace and quiet that is often found there.

An added benefit to building a gazebo is that you can put down a beautiful flagstone walkway leading to the back door of your house. This is a great place to install some ground lights in a soft colour such as orange or yellow to set the mood and keep everyone safe.

Furniture

The best kind of furniture for an outdoor space is low-maintenance and sturdy enough to resist all kinds of weather. Wooden tables and chairs are always a safe bet as long as they have been treated properly. However, these types of tables and chairs are usually heavy and end up being fairly stationary, which many people are not very happy about. The ability to rearrange and modify the overall look and feel is important for most people these days, so choosing from lightweight options like folding chairs may be better for you when it comes to seating. Whichever option you choose to go with, it is a good idea to get waterproof, outdoor cushions to put on your seating, as that will make your long outdoor meetings with friends more comfortable.

Lighting

%d0%bd%d1%828The finishing touch of any design arrangement is always the lighting. The correct light choices can make or break an intended mood, and they can also complement specific textures and building materials to bring out the best in them.

There are a couple of options out there such as ground lighting along pathways, fire torches filled with citronella oil to keep the mosquitos away, elevated lampposts, and many more. Some of them are wired to the property’s electrical network, some are battery powered and need to be changed every few months, and others are powered by the sun. Choosing the right one depends on your needs and it is a good idea to get an idea about how the light produced will interact with the space.

Summary

The next time you find yourself considering possible improvements to your back yard or garden, looking for ideas that could make the space more inviting, keep in mind that you are creating an environment in which memories will be made. The outdoor space is where the late-night conversations with friends occur, the birthday parties for your kids, and the Sunday BBQ parties on game day. Every decision that you make has to take all of the possible scenarios into account. Happy planning, and have fun.
